The general wisdom is that they bloom prolifically when their roots are very tightly crowded.

Alas, I gave the cymbidium to a friend in Berkeley who has kept them in a pot, and this is what they look like today:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/badthings/5668083510/in/photostreamchuck b.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00882763861745236443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14345890.post-78138298434640062422011-05-03T21:23:22.970-07:002011-05-03T21:23:22.970-07:00just wondering how the cymbidiums planted directly...just wondering how the cymbidiums planted directly into your yard, instead of in a pot, are going? I've been wondering if cymbidiums would do alright directly in the ground here in los angeles.sierra1194https://www.blogger.com/profile/05647333067803903166noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14345890.post-20122556903557578022009-12-06T15:10:56.524-08:002009-12-06T15:10:56.524-08:00Gosh, I don't remember where I got it. I know it's rare in nature (presumably limited to Santa Cruz Island), but I think it's generally available in the native plant trade.chuck b.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00882763861745236443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14345890.post-54657869859054602382009-12-02T16:24:33.647-08:002009-12-02T16:24:33.647-08:00Hi Chuck,

That yellow variant is very unusual - would you mind sharing where you got it? There are a few natural populations of yellow /cardinalis/ around, and I'm curious if it's from one of them.

Thanks,
Kelsey Byers
kjbyers@uw.edu
(grad student at UW in Seattle)Kelsey Byershttp://students.washington.edu/kjbyers/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14345890.post-63231658256709672012007-07-30T10:19:00.000-07:002007-07-30T10:19:00.000-07:00I think your garden's coming along really well! They may have made a poor choice of bamboos, but I look at it and see the fate of any garden that is abandoned.

I am fairly certain that my old garden will be desert dust within three years. It may become an eyesore, but that might not be as oppressive as a well watered abandoned garden.Christopher C. But the depth is nearly identical. His lower deck removes some of his ground space.

I have approx 450 sq. ft. of dirt, and a little bit more of concrete.

Thanks for the compliments...this is the only garden I've ever had, and I feel like I've learned a lot about manipulating small spaces in the last couple of years.chuck b.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00882763861745236443noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14345890.post-67029484362606855982007-07-28T09:27:00.000-07:002007-07-28T09:27:00.000-07:00Is your garden the same size as your neighbor's ya...Is your garden the same size as your neighbor's yard? If so, I'm impressed by how much you've done with such a small plot. I've never gotten the sense that your garden is tiny---you've made it live larger with a cloak of green texture and a variety of beautiful flowering plants.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
