I sure wish restaurants would adopt this policy, also! Then we could all get fresher food while supporting local agriculture, even when we go out to eat.

For it to work in big metropolitan areas, one thing that has to change is sprawl. There can be sprawl, but with farmland set asides to someone can grow on it for the locals. California has so much fertile farmland and great soil all over the place. It's a shame we don't value that natural resource more highly.
