"Arthur Shapiro, who teaches entomology at UC Davis, has a standing offer: If you bring him the first cabbage white butterfly of the year caught outdoors -- and that part is important -- in Yolo, Solano or Sacramento counties, he'll buy you a pitcher of beer."

Do you know the word "phenology"? Learn about it at the link.

I was an entomology undergrad at Davis (class of 2004). Art Shapiro is a fixture around campus and town-- he always wears a red hooded sweatshirt and black converse, has a wild beard, and looks like a bum to most undergrads outside those who haunt Storer and Briggs Halls. These flyers used to circulate every Winter Quarter.

Great blog! I'm really enjoying it.
