It took a blue-haired Aussie to elevate an all-American dish to new heights. Bakesale Betty's fried chicken sandwich has such a feverish following that people travel to Oakland's Temescal neighborhood from as far away as San Francisco and Walnut Creek just to buy one.

"I just love the idea of coleslaw and fried chicken on a roll," says Betty, 33.

She loves it so much, in fact, that she took what was her go-to picnic dish and put it on the menu when she opened her namesake bakery, Bakesale Betty, in 2005. There have been lines out the door of the corner storefront ever since.
