"A mysterious illness is killing tens of thousands of honeybee colonies across the country, threatening honey production, the livelihood of beekeepers and possibly crops that need bees for pollination." Link.

And it's not the varroa mite.

That's a bummer, but this is def. my favorite quote of the day: "We have seen a lot of things happen in 40 years, but this is the epitome of it all."

Thanks for the info. This is really a crisis. The whole pollination situation has been on the brink of disaster for a few years now, and this might take it over the top. Blame pesticides for starting the whole downward spiral. All the native popilations are gone and the only pollinators left are the European transplant. Now what are they going to do? go around a hand pollinate every almond flower?
Very very sad. Scary too.

That sucks! I try real hard to support pollinators of all kinds, and bought myself a mason bee house several years ago. They don't sting, aren't as complicated as honeybees, and it's helpful to flower production, for sure! Here's a link to my supplier

and I'll blog about it soon myself.
